Bird count yields different species but fewer volunteers

This year’s local participation in the Christmas Bird Count (CBC) was down slightly in Trail but the birds showed up for the event.

This year’s local participation in the Christmas Bird Count (CBC) was down slightly in Trail but the birds showed up for the event.

While final counts aren’t in from all counters in the area, Trail volunteer, Shirley Coffin, reported numerous species in her observations.

“There was just one observer in Trail, Casino, and Genelle and I had four bird feeder counts so a lot did not get covered,” Coffin said in an email reply. “I did have a fairly good count with 21 species, with a Northern Pygmy Owl seen in Sunningdale. There was also a Great Horned Owl seen in Casino and Great Blue Herons and a Ruffled Grouse in Genelle.”
