Cycling grandmothers collect thousands for Africa

Nearly $50,000 raised on trek from Campbell River to Victoria

Victoria’s grannies have pedalled their way to success in support of African grandmothers.

The Victoria Grandmothers for Africa’s fifth annual bicycle tour saw 23 cyclists raise nearly $50,000.

Since the event’s inception, the group has generated almost $200,00 in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign.

The campaign funds grassroots initiatives that support African grandmothers who are raising their HIV/AIDS-orphaned grandchildren.

The cyclists covered about 280 kilometres, beginning in Campbell River on Sept. 9 and ending in Victoria on Sept. 11.
