One person is dead and two others are in hospital in serious condition after a two-car collision on Highway 22 Tuesday afternoon.

Police say a woman died in hospital a few hours after the accident, which occurred at about 3:15 p.m. near the China Creek Road access into Genelle, about 14 kilometres south of Castlegar.

Traffic was backed up in both directions for kilometres while emergency crews tried to extricate the victims from the cars. The three were taken to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail with unspecified injuries.

There’s no word on the condition of the two survivors.

RCMP Traffic Services investigators from Nelson were on the scene Wednesday morning taking measurements. Sergeant Chad Badry says the investigation is continuing.
