Meet the Candidates: Royce Schmidt

Village of Montrose: Schmidt, Royce – Councillor Candidate

I have been a Montrose resident since 2001. My wife Janice was born and raised in Montrose. I am 57, and self employed operating an online promotional products business. I previously served two terms on Montrose council from 2002 to 2008. I was the Director of the Municipal Insurance Association of BC 2003 to 2008

I think the most serious issue facing Montrose Council is the threat of the City of Trail annexing the Columbia Gardens Industrial Area and the affect it will have on the Beaver Valley and its ability to continue to fund recreation services.

If the City of Trail is successful in their annexation, it must not create any financial hardship to the Beaver Valley.

I think the biggest outstanding issue from the last three years is the ongoing rift between the Beaver Valley and the City of Trail regarding use of their recreation facilities.

There has to be serious discussion to resolve this. And this needs to be done in an ongoing series of ongoing “open public meetings,” perhaps with some citizens also taking seats at the table.

Having been involved in some of the “closed door discussions” in the past I found it quite amusing how different the various parties reported what went on.
