Changes are coming to Warfield council in the new year. Mayor Ted Pahl is leaving and Coun. Diane Langman has thrown her name into the ring

Warfield voters can write down Feb. 25 as the day they will have a new mayor and at least one new councillor in the coming year.

There is already one hat thrown in the ring - Coun. Diane Langman is resigning from her councillor seat effective Dec. 29 and has confirmed with the Trail Times that she will run for mayor.

With current Mayor Ted Pahl leaving the position effective Dec. 31, council crossed a few to-dos off their list during the regular meeting last week.

First, the panel appointed Jackie Patridge, the village’s corporate officer as CEO (Chief Electoral Officer). Once the electoral officer was selected, in this case at Dec. 16 council, it was her job to set a general voting day on a Saturday and no later than 80 days after the CEO appointment.

Patridge confirmed with the Trail Times that election day will be Feb. 25 from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. in council chambers at the village office on Schofield Highway.

Voters will have two additional opportunities to cast a ballot during advance polls slated for Feb. 15 and Feb. 22.

Before all that, however, the nomination period needs to open. Patridge says nominations packages can be picked up at the village office starting Jan. 9 with the nomination period opening the following day and running until Jan. 20.

“We, the staff, are all sad to see Ted go,” Patridge added. “Although we know he is off on the next exciting chapter of his life. He is kind hearted and fun, and really a joy to work with.”

Warfield has already had one byelection since the 2014 civic election.

Four people put up their names for a councillor seat earlier this year. With a 27 per cent voter turnout, Arlene Parkinson was elected to the role on April 9.
