The family of Mary Oliver announces the passing of their forever loved mother, grandma and great-grandma on July 18, 2016 at the age of 97. Born August 31, 1918 in Ballykelly, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, Mom travelled by boat with her parents and then 2 younger sisters to Canada, settling in Edmonton for a short while before relocating to Trail in 1929. She was the matriarch of Trail’s Mailey clan – the eldest of 10 children born to John “Paddy” and Norah Mailey. It was while working as a switchboard operator for the telephone company that she met and married her husband Jim Oliver. Together they loved and raised their seven children on Shaver’s Bench in Trail. Predeceased by her husband Jim in 1991, parents John and Norah Mailey, sisters; Martha (Buck) Jones, Nora Horne, Maggie (Kittie) Bradford, brothers; Jimmy, Johnny and Danny Mailey, grandson baby Kevin and granddaughter Mary DeVos. Mom was a humble, quiet and religious woman who will forever be remembered for her kind, compassionate ways as well as brewing a great cup of tea and having the best “belly laugh ever” by her surviving daughters Kerry (Dan) O’Connor, Rosemary (Chuck) Shippit, Marianne (Sam) Johnston, Christine (Steven) Unti, sons; Barry, Colin, Kevin (Debbie), brothers; Leo (Eileen), Kevin (Agnes), Owen (Mary), sisters-in-law; Doris and Leila Mailey, 20 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, July 25, 2016 at 10:30 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with Father Bart van Roijen, Celebrant. Burial to follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Our family is so very grateful for the excellent care provided by the home support ladies and staff at Poplar Ridge over the past four years.
