Mamma/Nonna took her long journey home peacefully on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at the young age of 72 years. Silvia was born in Grimaldi, Cosenza Italy on March 25, 1938.

At the age of 17, Silvia moved to Canada in 1955, where she first resided in Trail, then moved to Lethbridge, AB. In Lethbridge is where she met and married the love of her life, Santé.

Silvia was a very devoted Mamma, Nonna, and Bisnonna. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, making sure that they were well fed and teaching all of them to sing “Vishuzza Mia, Dové Si Stato”, as well as passing on her rich Italian heritage. Silvia looked forward with anticipation to the arrival of her first great-grandson.

Mamma was a quiet, patient, loving lady who always put others first. She took great pride and pleasure in creating a home full of hospitality and her famous homemade meals. The most important part of Silvia’s life was her family. She created a life full of love, laughter, strong family values, affection and a large circle of friends. Silvia also had a love for music. Her spirit will live on through her spirit.

Silvia is survived by her four children: Iolanda (Mark) Vanderzee, Guy (Shelley) Vercillo, Liana Vercillo-Iorio, and Tony (Reanne) Vercillo; eight grandchildren: Teresa, Michael, Derek, Kristan, David, Christopher, Riley and Guy Jr.; one great grandson: Matthew Iorio-Sawchenko Jr.; Uncle Silvio Mauro of Lethbridge, Sisters Louisa Malito, Maria Ciardullo of Trail, Annetta Rose of Grimaldi, Italy; sister-in-law Iolanda Vercillo-Suriano of Genoa, Italy; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews from Canada, the United States, and Italy.

She was predeceased by her husband Santé Vercillo, daughter-in-law Sandy Vercillo, grandson Danny Vercillo, grandson-in-law Matthew Sawchenko Sr., brother Angelo Mauro, sister Idealma Nigro, and her parents Giuseppe and Teresa Mauro.

Silvia will be dearly missed by all of those who knew her.

Father Don Wilson will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at 10:30 a.m., with entombment to take place at the Trail Mausoleum. Bill Clark of Personal Alternative Funeral Services “Carberry’s Chapel” is entrusted with arrangements.
