Over 300 participants, including about 150 Teck employees, crowded in at the starting line for the Silver City Days Fun Run on Sunday at Gyro Park.

The popular annual event ran from Gyro Park through Sunningdale and back for the 5-kilometre run, while the more ambitious runners did the 10-k through Sunningdale, then East Trail, across the Columbia River Skywalk and downtown Trail before returning to Gyro.

Trail’s Jackson Konkin knocked off perennial Fun-Run champion Mike Zahn by racing to first place in the 5-km run in a blistering time of 16 minutes and 49 seconds. The 17-year-old athlete is training for the Canada Games Qualifier in Vancouver this weekend. Konkin has already advanced through two rounds of training camps, and will compete in a time trials at the UBC pool and a run and bike later in the day on Saturday, before tackling the North Shore Triathlon on Sunday. Konkin came in 10th place at the 2016 Canadian Jr. Triathlon Championship in July last year.

Nelson’s Nicola Everton took top spot in the 5-km Women’s event in a time of 20:30. Ironman triathlete Dallas Cain won the 10-km run for the third straight year in 37:03, while Fruitvale’s Heather Johnson repeated as the ladies 10-k champion. Johnson is an ultra-marathoner and Trans-Rockies Run competitor.

See top results per age category later this week.
