The Murphy Family Foundation and the Trail Smoke Eaters made a huge contribution to Greater Trail schools with its Smokies in Our Schools program.
“In honour of the fourth annual Murphy Family Foundation, Smokies in Our Schools season, Rich Murphy with the Murphy Family Foundation is once again excited to give back to our schools and the youth in our communities,” said Smoke Eaters marketing manager Allison McCarthy.
Seven schools participated in the program by selecting a Smoke Eaters game night, selling discounted tickets, and tapping into their creative efforts in packing the arena by engaging with their school, staff and the community.
Participating schools included Webster Elementary, Rossland Summit School, Fruitvale Elementary, J.L. Crowe, Glenmerry Elementary, Twin Rivers Elementary, and St. Michael’s Catholic School.
The Murphy Family Foundation announced the top three winners at Friday’s (March 3) game against the Chilliwack Chiefs.
Fruitvale Elementary earned this year’s first place prize and received $4,000 from the foundation. J.L. Crowe came second taking home $3,000, and $2,500 went to the third place Rossland Summit School. All other schools were awarded $1,500 for participating. The Foundation also donated $500-USD to the Kootenay Columbia Learning Centre.
The $16,000 contribution to area schools reflects the Murphy Family Foundation’s support and commitment to Greater Trail and surrounding communities and strives to provide opportunities that will empower and encourage youth.
“Congratulations to the top 3 schools and a big thank you to the other schools for taking part, supporting the Smoke Eaters and engaging with your students, staff and families. We look forward to working with your school again next season, planning another fun Smokies in Our Schools night.”
Support the Smoke Eaters as they head into their final home games of the regular season this weekend. Trail hosts the Coquitlam Express on Friday at 7 p.m. and the Surrey Eagles on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Cominco Arena.
