Shaping up one kick at a time with help from Trail gym

Kickboxing is a form of martial art that involves punching, kicking, and footwork

Kickboxing is a form of martial art that involves punching, kicking, and footwork. The sport incorporates moves from other types of martial arts, such as karate, as well as boxing. Benefits include improving cardiovascular endurance and increasing muscle strength in both the upper and lower body.

Besides all that, kickboxing is fun.

And that’s the takeaway from members of Trail Association for Community Living (TACL) after a recent training session with Glen Kalesniko of Pride Gym, in Trail.

“We contacted Pride Gym to see if (Glen) could do a couple sessions with our group as he has done before … Our participants talk about it fondly,” explains Jessica Degeorgio, TACL program coordinator. “To our surprise, Glen said he had so much fun before that he welcomed us back and he even said, ‘no charge,’” Degeorgio adds. “Wow! So amazing, that doesn’t often happen these days.”

Kalesniko, Pride Gym owner and seasoned martial arts instructor, says kickboxing is an activity that gives a good workout along with an immediate sense of achievement.

“Punching and kicking a pad or bag is great release,” he said. “I feel the TACL group really enjoy the class and for me, I love seeing people getting that enjoyment.”

Regarding the ‘no charge’ part, Kalesniko says, “We are all part of the community.”
