Rows of gleaming chrome and highly polished custom paint jobs will be showcased at Gyro Park on Saturday for the sixth annual Smoke n’ Steel car show.
So far, the West Kootenay Smoke and Steel Car Club is expecting about 100 vehicles, but the number grows weekly, and this year spectators could see some first time entrants roar into town from south of the border.
Besides giving visitors a chance to admire automotive culture from a variety of styles and different eras, the show promises live entertainment, a memorabilia booth, a tire demonstration, local dealerships on site and a variety of food offerings during its 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The Gyro Park food concession will be open, street fare such as barbeque pulled pork and fire roasted peaches will be on the menu, and a wandering street magician will be getting up close and personal with his tricks, said Thompson.
“The automotive hobby is a portable work of art with intricate paint jobs, hours put into it and a lot of money,” said Thompson. “But above and beyond that, it is a social event where people get up to talk to each other and enjoy some food together.
“And it’s not just a man’s hobby, these days more and more ladies are also getting their hands dirty,” he added.“Why not?”
Last year, over 130 entrants from as far away as Enderby came out for the West Kootenay Smoke and Steel Car Club’s annual event. About 3,000 people passed through the park to check out the cars and venue, and Thompson is hoping for repeated success this year.
