Saturday, Oct. 5 in Trail and Sunday, Oct. 6 in Nelson, local pro lifers will peacefully demonstrate to raise awareness that abortion is a many faceted issue, which needs to be seriously thought about and discussed rationally.
Today, society speaks of a woman’s right to choose and lists it as one of the freedoms to be defended. However, science has progressed to prove that a baby developing in the womb has a human heart beating at 18 days, with a blood type different from that of the mother.
The debate is whether this tiny human deserves legal protection while still in the womb.
In June 2019 Prime Minister Trudeau pledged billions of taxpayer dollars to fund abortions worldwide for ten years. The Liberals also brought in a national "Values Test"associated with the Canada Summer Jobs program. They required that all organizations check a box indicating that they are pro-choice in order to access funding.
This did not just exclude pro-life organizations, it also excluded faith-based and other charities that could not in good conscience check the box. Women facing a problem or unplanned pregnancy are often not receiving the help they need and are pressured into choosing abortion as their solution. To address this need for help, a pregnancy care centre “Wee Care” has recently opened in Castlegar.
Local Life Chains join 320 communities across Canada and even more in the United States; participants holding signs to peacefully encourage women to not abort their child. Coming from a variety of political, religious and ideological viewpoints, these participants gather to show that abortion is still an important human rights issue.
Varied messages convey that help is available. Pro life groups believes every woman should make a choice both she and the baby can live with, so one sign reads “She’s a Child not a Choice”. In order to “Love them Both / Choose Life” as another message reads, the groups know it is important to actively offer help and support to pregnant women.
Signs with 1-250-608-3287 give the local Wee Care contact for assistance with unplanned pregnancy. One Life Chain sign reads “Adoption --- the Loving Option.”
With the changing methods of ‘open’ adoptions, much of the trauma of placing a child has been lessened. See www.AdoptioninCanada.ca.
Many participants may themselves have had abortions. These women want others who might later regret having an abortion, to know help and support is available at www.togetherforlife.net.
Everyone is welcome to join the peaceful gatherings.
