The Columbia-Kootenay-Southern Rockies federal riding.

Two candidates vying for the NDP nomination in the new federal riding of Columbia-Kootenay-Southern Rockies will debate at a public event in Trail on Jan. 11.

A news release from the Kootenay-Columbia Federal Riding Association states that the candidates are Kallee Lins, executive director of the West Kootenay Regional Arts Council, and Keith Page, Nelson city councillor and local business owner.

The purpose of the debate is to help decide who will represent the party in the new federal riding in the next federal election. NDP members in Columbia-Kootenay-Southern Rockies will cast their votes in the nomination race on Feb. 27. To vote in the nomination race, memberships must be purchased by Jan. 13. Memberships will be available for purchase at the debate.

The next federal election will take place no later than Oct. 20, 2025.

Following a realignment of federal riding boundaries in 2023, the riding, represented by Conservative MP Rob Morrison, will no longer include the West Kootenay communities of Rossland, Warfield, Rivervale and Genelle, which will now be located in the riding of South Okanagan - West Kootenay.

The debate will take place at the The Skills Centre, 1060 Eldorado Street in Trail.
