Trail residents will have a chance to explore the power of rhythm and community on Saturday, April 26, when Rhythm by Nature brings its Community Drumming Experience to the Bailey Theatre’s Muriel Griffiths Room.
The event runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and promises an evening of connection, creativity, and immersive group music-making—no prior experience required.
This will be the first time Patrick Carrick, founder of Rhythm by Nature, has hosted a full-scale, standalone drumming event in Trail.
Last summer, he was invited to participate in Trail’s Summer in the Park series, where he offered a taste of what community drumming can bring to a group.
That event, he recalls, was marked by enthusiastic participation. Many attendees had never drummed before.
“There was a lot of joy and laughter among the community,” he said. “This will be the first time hosting my own, more in-depth experience.”
The April 26 event is open to all, with a focus on adult participants, though families are welcome.
Absolute beginners are not only welcome but encouraged to attend. Experienced drummers will be invited to support newcomers, helping to foster a strong sense of inclusion and shared discovery.
Participants can expect an engaging and professionally facilitated session, using drums and percussion instruments from around the world.
Instruments will be provided, though guests are welcome to bring their own.
Carrick says the goal is simple: “(I want people to leave with) a stronger connection to their own inner rhythms. And a better understanding of the many wellness benefits to community drumming and that music-making and drumming is for everyone and has been since time immemorial.”
Group drumming, he adds, offers a long list of wellness benefits: reducing stress, supporting mental and emotional health, fostering a sense of connection, and providing a creative outlet that’s both fun and empowering.
“People new to this type of activity are not only welcome, they are encouraged to attend,” he said.
“Those with prior experience are invited to support new people during the event so that everyone feels empowered with their abilities with a powerful sense of connection by the end. The event is steered toward adults, but interested families are welcome."
Rhythm by Nature follows the Integrative Community Drum Circle model, which means the drumming is not based on any one tradition or culture.
Instead, it draws on global influences and emphasizes accessibility, creativity, and respect for diversity.
The instruments used are of professional quality and made from 100 per cent recycled wood fibre.
Carrick, a certified Circles of Rhythm master facilitator and REMO-endorsed Rhythm Wellness provider, has led community drumming events throughout the Columbia Basin since founding Rhythm by Nature in 2016.
His programs have become a fixture in the region, known for their inclusive, uplifting atmosphere.
The Trail Community Drumming Experience is part of a larger spring tour supported by the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance.
