As winter storms approach the Kootenay region, FortisBC is urging residents to prepare for potential power outages with a set of practical safety tips.
With unpredictable weather conditions and the risk of outages increasing, the utility company says it's committed to helping communities stay safe and warm during the stormy season.
Preparing for power outages
FortisBC recommends taking proactive steps to ensure you and your family are ready for a power outage:
• Make a family emergency plan: Share the plan with everyone in your household to ensure everyone knows what to do.
• Prepare an emergency kit: Include supplies for at least 72 hours and store it in an accessible spot for easy use in the dark.
• Stock up on warmth: Gather sleeping bags, blankets, and extra clothing to stay warm if the power goes out.
• Check carbon monoxide alarms: Make sure they’re working properly to ensure your safety.
• Protect electronics: Use surge protectors and keep devices charged ahead of time.
Staying safe during outages
If a power outage does occur, follow these tips to avoid hazards:
• Turn off electronics and appliances: This helps prevent power surges when electricity is restored.
• Avoid wet or damp conditions: Don’t touch circuit breakers or fuse panels with wet hands or while standing on a damp surface.
• Cook safely: Use barbecues or propane camp stoves outdoors only, to avoid the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
• Preserve food: Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain cold temperatures.
• Stay clear of downed power lines: Always stay back at least 10 metres (33 feet, the length of a school bus) and report hazards immediately to FortisBC’s 24-hour emergency line at 1-866-436-7847 or call 9-1-1.
FortisBC assures residents that their crews are on standby, ready to respond to any outages caused by the winter storms.
