Sessions go the second Friday of every month from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Riverfront Centre.

“Are you a young-at-heart man with some epic tales?” asks the Trail museum. “Is your family tired of your long-winded stories?”

Museum staff invite you to join the ‘Hot Stove League’ — sorry ladies, gents only — for a few hours of reminiscing, old photos and chatter, hot stove league-style.

“No pipes, but coffee is on us!” adds the museum.

Sessions go the second Friday of every month from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Riverfront Centre. Next session goes Aug. 9.

Reminiscing with stories and photos offers many benefits for seniors.

Those include:

Cognitive stimulation: Engaging in reminiscence helps stimulate the brain, improving memory and cognitive functions. Recalling past events can exercise neural pathways and keep the mind active.

Emotional well-being: Revisiting happy memories can boost mood and reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. It provides a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.

Social connection: Sharing stories and photos can strengthen relationships with family members and friends. It fosters a sense of belonging and connectedness.

Identity and self-worth: Reflecting on past achievements and life experiences reinforces a sense of identity and self-worth. It reminds seniors of their unique contributions and the meaningful moments in their lives.

Life review: Reminiscing allows seniors to review their life experiences, find meaning in their journey, and come to terms with unresolved issues. This can provide a sense of closure and peace.

Intergenerational bonding: Sharing stories and photos with younger generations helps preserve family history and traditions.

Cultural preservation: Seniors can pass down cultural heritage, values, and traditions through storytelling, ensuring that their legacy continues.

Therapeutic benefits: For some seniors, particularly those with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, reminiscing can be a therapeutic tool. It can improve mood, reduce agitation, and provide comfort.

Enhanced communication: Regularly engaging in conversations about the past can help maintain and enhance communication skills, including verbal expression and storytelling abilities.

Stress relief: Positive reminiscing can serve as a distraction from current worries and stressors, offering a mental escape to happier times.
