What started as a routine patrol last summer turned into a dramatic chase in East Trail, where a quick-thinking bystander stepped in to help RCMP apprehend a wanted man.

Now, that good Samaritan is being officially recognized for his bravery.

On Wednesday, June 12, 2024, a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer attempted to stop a 36-year-old local man with outstanding arrest warrants.

The suspect, spotted on McQuarrie Street, refused to comply, instead fleeing on his bicycle as the officer activated his lights and siren.

As the pursuit unfolded, Jason Mulder of Trail, witnessed the chase and took decisive action.

As the suspect rode past him, Mulder tripped the fleeing man, causing him to fall from his bicycle.

When the suspect tried to escape on foot, Mulder grabbed onto him, slowing him down just long enough for the officer to catch up and take the man into custody.

The arrest was made without further incident.

Fast forward to last week — Mulder’s quick actions and courage were formally recognized on Feb. 6 when Sgt. MikeWicentowich presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation for his role in the arrest.

“It is rare that a citizen puts themselves in jeopardy and steps in to help an officer arrest an individual,” said Sgt. Wicentowich.“We appreciate Jason’s quick actions, help, and bravery in this dynamic situation. The certificate is well earned and deserved. His family and community are very proud of him.”

Following the arrest, the suspect was held at the Trail RCMP detachment before being released under judicial conditions.

Sgt. Wicentowich previously quipped about Mulder’s well-timed intervention, saying, “We may have to train other members of the public on this gentleman’s technique for catching people.”

Mulder’s actions serve as a reminder of the power of community involvement in public safety, earning him well-deserved recognition for his bravery.
