Greater Trail Hospice Society is hosting its “Hike or Bike for Hospice,” with a “final lap” on Sept. 7.

For a second summer, you can use your hiking and biking efforts to raise money for a great local cause.

Greater Trail Hospice Society is hosting their “Hike or Bike for Hospice,” with a “final lap” on Sept. 7.

Brenda Hooper, board chair, explains how the fundraiser came about.

“We have long held our Swimathon in March,” Hooper begins. “And we have had feedback from people that said they would like to support us, but swimming is not their ‘thing.’

“‘Hike for Hospice’ is a national hospice event, so we decided to do a variation of this event.”

It works like this.

People register with the Greater Trail Hospice Society to either hike or bike anytime over the summer months and get sponsorship for their efforts.

Participants have varied goals. For example, one fundraiser is riding a stationary bike and walking around the neighbourhood.

Another has a goal of cumulatively hiking 250 kilometres (km) and is now at an impressive 126 km.

Another is planning to run a 25 km race in October, and is now training 15 to 20 km each week.

The “final lap,” on Sept 7, will start from the hospice society’s booth at the Trail Farmers Market and will involve walking the bridges together.

All funds raised will go to help fund hospice programs, which are not just end-of-life. Programs include grief support for adults and children, caregiver support, advance care planning, Nav-CARE, and friendly visitor.

The society is always working hard to recruit more volunteers.
