Letter: My opinion on ‘Global Warming’

“My concern is the effect container ships have on our oceans warming up,” writes Genia Obal.

Everyone has an opinion.

But do we know who is right?

My concern is the effect container ships have on our oceans warming up.

So I checked the internet.

As of 2022, there were 5,589 ships in the global fleet.

My next question was, what type of fuel do they use?

The answer was, mainly bunker fuel which is high in sulphur and generates harmful emissions.

In fact, it contains 2,000 times as much sulphur as the diesel used in U.S. and European automobiles!

Several years ago, we were reading a Courtenay newspaper.

The reporter was talking about global warming.

He stated that container ships pump the smoke from burning the bunker fuel right into the ocean.

That is why they don’t have smoke stacks.

In fact, he stated that 16 container ships (the size big retailers use) produce as much pollution as 35 million gas-fired vehicles!

So why are we blaming gas-fired vehicles for so much pollution?

Why don’t we talk more often about these other sources?

End of questions.

End of letter.
