NDP candidate's election signs defaced near Nelson

Damaging election signs is a criminal offence and the incident has been reported to the RCMP

Someone has been defacing federal election signs in the Nelson area.

The NDP campaign office for candidate Kallee Lins says every one of its 15 signs along the Highway 3 between the Slocan Valley Junction and the Nelson city limit were defaced.

Campaign manager Patricia Smuga said her office has reported this to the RCMP.

"We would like to add that we do not condone vandalism of political signs — whether they belong to our campaign or to any other candidate," Smuga said. "Respectful democratic engagement means allowing all voices to be heard, and acts of vandalism undermine that process."

Tampering with or stealing election signs is considered destruction of property under the Criminal Code of Canada and the Canada Elections Act.
