A 52-year-old man from Nelson lost his driving privileges after officers determined his prescribed medication impaired his ability to operate a vehicle.

On Monday afternoon, Trail police and BC Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a vehicle being driven erratically on Highway 22 near Genelle.

Officers located the driver and conducted a roadside stop.

A BC Highway Patrol officer suspected impairment and administered a roadside breath test, which the driver passed.

However, the man disclosed he was wearing a prescribed transdermal fentanyl patch.

After consulting a medical professional, the officer determined the medication significantly impaired the man’s ability to drive.

As a result, the driver was issued a 24-hour Immediate Roadside Prohibition, and his vehicle was impounded due to multiple deficiencies found by the officer.

“Medication can play a serious role in impairment,” said Sgt. Mike Wicentowich. “Please consult with your doctor and follow all directions if you are taking any prescription medication that may affect your ability to drive.”
