What is a double rainbow?

A double rainbow is a meteorological phenomenon where two distinct rainbows appear in the sky, one outside the other.

It occurs when sunlight is refracted, reflected, and dispersed in water droplets, creating a spectrum of light.

The primary rainbow is formed when light is reflected once inside the water droplets, and it has red on the outer edge and violet on the inner edge.

The secondary rainbow, which is fainter and appears outside the primary rainbow, is formed when light is reflected twice inside the water droplets.

This secondary reflection causes the colours to be reversed, with red on the inner edge and violet on the outer edge.

The space between the two rainbows is known as Alexander's band, which appears darker due to the different light paths and interactions.
