April 3 marks Independent Artist Day, a chance to spotlight the talent and drive of artists who forge their own paths.
Among them: Rosslander Elsie White, seen here in a 1957 photo alongside several of her works.
White’s pieces were featured in Rossland’s Fourth Annual Art Exhibition, held in May 1957.
The event was organized by the Rossland Art Club, which ran exhibitions annually from at least 1954 to 1957.
Beyond those dates, not much else is known about the group, but it played a quiet yet meaningful role in the city’s artistic history.
The photo of Elsie White, preserved by the Rossland Museum and Discovery Centre and digitized with help from the Columbia Basin Institute of Regional History, is a rare glimpse into that vibrant creative scene.
Museum staff welcome any additional information about the Rossland Art Club, as well as historical photos of the city's storied history.
Photos can be digitized for preservation and originals retained.
