With wildfire season already heating up across Western Canada, Rossland’s FireSmart Program is hosting a timely community event to help residents stay one step ahead of wildfire threats.
The FireSmart forum is set for Thursday, May 15 at the Rossland Miner’s Hall from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m..
The session offers practical guidance on reducing wildfire risk at the household level.
The evening includes a presentation by Don Mortimer, a local resident and FireSmart Canada Wildfire Mitigation Specialist, who will share videos and slides showing how wildfires ignite homes, and what can be done to stop it.
FireSmart is a national program that helps Canadians increase their resilience to wildfire by providing education, resources, and tools to reduce the risk of fire damage to homes and communities.
Rossland’s local program supports this effort by encouraging residents to assess their properties and make simple, often low-cost changes that can make a significant difference.
Attendees will also have the chance to ask questions, learn yard and home maintenance techniques, and gain insight from recent wildfire disasters in places like Jasper and Kelowna.
Mortimer’s message is clear: preventing destruction can start with basic tools and a few hours of work.
The event is free, but to help organizers plan for refreshments, registration is required.

As last weekend’s Wildfire Hazard Cleanup Day demonstrated, Rosslanders are already taking action.
The FireSmart Forum aims to keep that momentum going, one yard, one home at a time.
