The Salmo and District Healthcare Auxiliary has contributed $5,000 to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) Health Foundation’s Mental Health Matters campaign, one of the foundation’s most ambitious fundraising efforts to date.

“This meaningful contribution plays a vital role in helping us revitalize mental health care across the Kootenay Boundary region,” the foundation shared. “Supporting critical upgrades to facilities, equipment, and programming that directly impact patient care and recovery.”

Albert Benson, board director of the KBRH Health Foundation, accepted the donation from auxiliary members Kathy, Ardeth, and Lynn.

“We are grateful for the commitment and compassion shown by the auxiliary toward healthcare improvement in our community,” the foundation added.

Launched in February, the Mental Health Matters campaign aims to raise $2 million to upgrade mental health facilities and services at KBRH.

Key priorities include revitalizing the Daly Pavilion and Harbour House, and developing a new outdoor space for pediatric patients.

Funds raised will go toward modern equipment, trauma-informed care environments, and program development for patients and care teams alike.

“Mental health affects every aspect of our community,” said Foundation Executive Director Lisa Pasin. “By supporting this campaign, we are investing in facilities and care environments that will reduce stigma and provide compassionate, patient-centred care for people of all ages.”

Each year, families and individuals throughout the Kootenay Boundary rely on KBRH’s mental health services.

“This campaign represents hope and resilience for our community,” Pasin said.

“Together, we can ensure that everyone has access to the care they need, close to home."

Founded in 1972, the Salmo and District Healthcare Auxiliary has long supported healthcare in the region.

The auxiliary's Thrift Store, operating since 1974, is located in the lower level of the Salmo Legion and open twice a week.

Through annual events like the Mother’s Day Plant and Bake Sale and the Christmas Bazaar and Raffle, the auxiliary raises funds to support regional hospitals, the local Health and Wellness Centre, and cancer lodges in Kelowna and Vancouver.

It also provides two $1,000 bursaries each year to students pursuing careers in the health field.

The auxiliary contributes to local food security efforts and regularly applies for community grants to enhance its store operations, helping make it a vital part of Salmo’s social and economic fabric.
