Trail’s much-anticipated 2025 Polar Plunge for Special Olympics British Columbia (SOBC) is back on Saturday, March 1 at 11 a.m. - but with a big twist.
This year, plungers won’t be jumping into the icy Columbia River.
Instead of the traditional river dip at the City of Trail shoreline, participants will head to Waneta Plaza, where the local fire department will ensure everyone gets soaked with a Polar Spray from their fire hoses.
The event remains a fun and meaningful fundraiser to support SOBC Trail's year-round sports, youth, and health programs for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
The theme, #Plunge4SOBC, encourages the community to participate, raise funds, and promote inclusion.
“This year’s plunge will be different, but just as exciting,” organizers said. “Whether you’ve done the river dip in the past or you’re new to the event, we’re inviting everyone to come out, get sprayed, and support local athletes.”
Special Olympics BC provides opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to develop confidence, make friends, and participate in sport.
Funds raised from the Polar Spray will directly benefit SOBC athletes in Trail, Rossland, Montrose, and Fruitvale, ensuring they have access to high-quality training, competitions, and community programs.
Locally, SOBC Trail offers a variety of sports and activities, including 5-pin bowling, basketball, bocce, floor hockey, golf, snowshoeing, swimming, and fitness-focused programs like Active Start/FUNdamentals for young athletes and Club Fit for overall health and well-being.
For many athletes, Special Olympics is more than just sports—it’s a community, a source of confidence, and a place where they can feel included.
How to participate
Participants can register as individuals or as part of a team through the official Polar Plunge website or by filling out a pledge form.
Community members who prefer to stay dry can still contribute by making an online donation.
