Along with the lazy days of summer outside the classroom sometimes comes shenanigans.
Such was the case last Friday when the Trail RCMP received a call from a Fruitvale homeowner about teenagers playing “ding-dong ditch” in the 1700 block of Columbia Gardens Road.
For those longer in the tooth, ding-dong ditch was once known as nicky nicky nine doors.
An officer responded to the complaint just before 10 p.m., spoke with the caller, and then followed up with one youth reportedly connected to the group.
The officer advised the teen to stop the behaviour due to the complaint.
The Trail RCMP encourages anyone who witnesses similar incidents to report them to the non-emergency line at 250-364-2566 so officers can respond directly.
“These ding-dongs definitely ditched after ringing the bell of the complainant as the officer could not locate them,” said Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.
“Now that school is out for summer, there will likely be an increase in summer mischief.”
He advises homeowners/tenants to not take matters into their own hands, and instead contact the detachment when this nuisance activity occurs.
“And an officer will intervene and resolve the incident as soon as possible,” added Wicentowich.
Ding-dong ditch was also a problem in Glenmerry last summer.
One homeowner reported that installing security cameras, and signs noting their presence, has been an effective deterrent.
