Trail Blazers: Reflecting on the 1982 BC Winter Games

Trail Blazers is a weekly feature in partnership with the Trail Museum and Archives

As Trail and Rossland begin their one-year countdown to hosting the 2026 BC Winter Games, this week’s Trail Blazers feature couldn’t be more fitting.

Rewind to early March 1982, when the City of Trail welcomed over 2,500 athletes from across British Columbia for the BC Winter Games.

The excitement was electric, and the community’s pride was palpable.

The Games, which first launched in Kamloops in 1979, quickly became a province-wide tradition.

After stops in Kimberley (1980) and Prince George (1981), it was Trail’s turn to shine.

And shine it did.

“The enthusiasm from the citizens and athletes of Trail to host the Games was ‘unprecedented’ and largely influenced the Games committee to consider the Silver City,” says Addison Oberg from the Trail Museum and Archives.

Oberg also credits former Mayor Chuck Lakes for his unwavering belief that the Home of Champions was the perfect stage for such a prestigious event.

His vision, and the community’s commitment, transformed that belief into reality.

With the support of a tireless volunteer crew and the local school district stepping up to provide housing, equipment, and facilities, athletes had one job: show off their talents.

And they certainly did.

The 1982 Games remain a proud chapter in Trail’s history.

With the 2026 BC Winter Games on the horizon, there’s hope that the same vibrant spirit will be rekindled.

Were you there in ‘82?

The Trail Museum and Archives wants to hear from you.
