Trail U18 Orioles knock off top team

Trail U18 Orioles pitcher Levi Konken brings the heat. The Orioles play their final two league games of the summer on Sunday with a doubleheader against North Shore.

The Trail U18 Orioles are in the hunt for a playoff berth, after upsetting the top ranked team in the BC Minor Baseball College Prep division on Sunday. 

The Orioles won 3-of-4, sweeping its two games against the Vancouver Island Mariners, before splitting its two-game series against the Kamloops Riverdogs in Kamloops on the weekend. 

Trail made a stunning comeback in the sixth inning to defeat the Riverdogs, 4-3, in its final game of the weekend. 

Down 3-1, Trail loaded the bases, and Levi Konken plated one run on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2. Then Orioles Tuzo Sevigny stepped up and knocked in two runs on a grounder for the victory. 

Jack Boyes started on the mound for Trail, giving up three runs on four hits over five strong innings, and striking out two, while walking three. 

Sevigny also pitched no-hit ball in the final two innings, while Thane Joyce went 2-for-3 for the Orioles. 

With the wins, Trail at 6-23 is tied with the 6-24 Mariners for the eighth and final playoff berth. 

With the loss, Kamloops falls out of the league lead and into second place with a 21-8 record, two points back of Chilliwack. 

In Game 1, Orioles pitcher Konken gave up just two hits in a close 3-2 victory over the Mariners Saturday, July 6. 

The Orioles scored an unearned run in the first, and Raiden Dobie and Owen Dickson each drove in a run on the way to the 3-2 victory. 

Konken went five and one-third innings, striking out six and walking six. Dobie came in and shut the Mariners down the rest of the way for the save. 

In Game 2 Saturday against the host Riverdogs, the Orioles jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the top of the third after Dobie doubled in Joyce and Dickson. 

But the Riverdogs battled back, scoring five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth for the 7-4 win. 

Orioles pitcher Tate Robinson took the loss giving up six earned runs on seven hits over four and one-third innings. 

The Orioles found their bats in Game 3, with a crucial 7-3 victory over the Mariners. 

Dickson got the start and went seven strong innings for the Os, giving up two earned runs on eight hits, six Ks, and three walks. 

Dickson also helped out offensively, going 3-for-4, along with teammates Connor Drake and Kullen Benbow. 

The U18 Orioles game against North Shore was rescheduled with the first match going Saturday, July 13 at 7 p.m. and game two on Sunday, July 14 at 10 a.m. at Jason Bay Field at Butler Park, their final home games of the season.
