Trail Area VAWIR (Violence Against Women in Relationships) reminds the community that their members will attend the Smoke Eaters’ home game on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 1), encouraging fans to pin a white ribbon to their lapels.
With Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action to End Violence Against Women approaching, the White Ribbon Campaign offers a simple yet powerful way to acknowledge the significance of Dec. 6.
White ribbons serve as a reminder for communities to pause, remember women affected by violence, and reflect on ways to help end it.
In addition to distributing white ribbons, a thought-provoking window display is featured at Mills Office Productivity, highlighting the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This global campaign runs from Nov. 25 to Dec. 10, raising awareness and inspiring action.
The VAWIR committee is also encouraging residents to show their support by displaying purple lights in offices, homes, and public spaces through Dec. 10.
As part of the awareness efforts, the annual VAWIR vigil will be replaced by a special gathering and memory walk hosted by members of the BC Nurses Union on Thursday, Dec. 5.
This outdoor event, held on Esplanade Avenue near the Trail Library, will honour women impacted by domestic violence.
Beginning at 5 p.m., the event will feature speakers, a memory walk, and the opportunity to sign a call-to-action letter addressed to Premier David Eby.
Organizers invite the public to join this meaningful event to support change and raise awareness about domestic violence.
“Together, we will raise awareness, honour survivors, and take action toward breaking the cycle,” organizers stated.
These community initiatives aim to provide opportunities for reflection and learning, empowering individuals to help end violence and abuse targeted at people because of their sex, gender, gender identity, or gender expression.
