Carrie Babuick and her boyfriend Marco Marrello are the recipients of this year’s award for best new garden.

Their home, located on 4th Avenue, was Carries childhood home. Four years ago, the couple and their son, Mason, moved back in.

Having spent lots of time with her mother in the garden, it was natural for Babuick to return to her roots.

“My mother and I spent a lot of time together in the garden. When I’m here it feels like she’s here with me.”

The rock walls, constructed by her father, form a sturdy backing for the yard.

Scattered along the walls and all through the property are assortments of butterflies, which, in honour of her mother, have become the theme of the garden.

Vast assortments of flowers are planted along the edges of the yard, including lilies and daisies.

Marrello is in charge of the edible portion of the yard and looks after a garden full of vegetables and herbs. He has also recently constructed a greenhouse and a shelter for the bunnies that the family has taken in.

Babuick says she spends a lot of time in her garden, sometimes even staying out until it’s dark.

“It’s like a getaway. It’s where I like to spend a lot of my time.”

After being advised by a member of the gardening club to enter the Trail in Bloom contest, the couple put in their names and came home with the first prize honours.

“We were surprised when we heard our names called, but we are very honoured.”
