A recent incident involving teens climbing on and jumping off of the CPKC rail bridge in Castlegar has police warning of the dangers and consequences of the risky behaviour.
On Aug. 6, a concerned resident witnessed four people climbing onto the Robson side of the bridge. They notified the city and police, but by the time police arrived, two people had already jumped into the Columbia River.
Sgt. Monty Taylor says, "Injury and death happen regularly in these type of incidents. You really never know what is under the water."
Taylor added the unknowns include constantly changing water depth, varied ground surface below, rocks and logs.
While Taylor says the dangers are the first and foremost concern, individuals can also be fined $600 for being on train tracks or bridges.
