The final public apology to the Sons of Freedom Doukhobor children that were placed in the New Denver School is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Feb. 27.

The apology will be given by B.C. Premier David Eby during the 10 a.m. session of the Provincial Legislature, before question period.

It can be viewed online at https://www.leg.bc.ca/content-hansard/Pages/Legislative-Broadcasting-and-Webcasting.aspx.

It can also be viewed on television channels that provide live video from the legislature. Depending on your television service provider, that may include Star Choice satellite (channel 393) and the Telus Optik TV (channel 843), Castlegar, Nelson or Trail basic cable (channel 84) and Grand Forks basic cable (channel 113).

In the 1950s approximately 200 children were taken from their parents and placed in a former sanatorium in New Denver primarily because their parents identified as Sons of Freedom Doukhobors who opposed government policies and regulations, including refusing to send their children to public school.

The provincial government has set aside $10 million for legacy initiatives, but has not offered direct financial compensation to the survivors or their families. The government has not released details regarding the specific programs included in the $10 million or how the funds will be administered.
