Searchers have found the body of an elderly Trail man missing since Monday.

Nelson Search and Rescue (SAR) spokesperson Scott Spencer said the body of 84-year-old George Terry Panton was found along the Columbia River on Tuesday morning around 9 a.m.

Nearly two dozen volunteer searchers and SAR crews from Rossland, Grand Forks, Creston, Castlegar, Nelson took part in the search for Panton. That included checking shorelines and visiting homes in the surrounding neighborhoods.

The search was suspended due to darkness Monday night, and resumed with aerial support from a helicopter on Tuesday morning.

His body was found soon after.

Police say they won’t be releasing details of Panton’s death in respect of the family.
