Angel Flight East Kootenay, a non-profit organization providing vital transportation services to residents in the East Kootenay region has expanded its fleet by adding a second aircraft to better meet the growing demand for services.

Angel Flight East Kootenay has acquired a Cessna 821, a single-engine, non-pressurized plane that accommodates three passengers plus the pilot. The Cessna 821 was the organization’s primary aircraft during its first few years of operation, when it was rented from a local search and rescue group.

Now fully owned by AFEK, it will serve as a backup to the larger aircraft, particularly for overflow on high-demand days. As the smaller plane is weather-dependent and lacks de-icing capabilities, it will be used when conditions allow.

The new Cessna 821 complements the organization's larger Cessna 414A, which is a twin-engine, pressurized aircraft that seats up to five passengers.

Due to an update in our maintenance schedule, AFEK is currently undergoing important maintenance on the Cessna 414A.

The aircraft will be out of service for a period during March and early April 2025. During this time, flights will be limited to our Cessna 821, which, due to its smaller capacity, will limit the number of passengers we can transport.

Passengers are encouraged to schedule their medical flights for mid-April and beyond, when possible, to ensure availability. We recommend submitting flight requests in advance to help us accommodate demand during this period.

“We want to make sure our residents of the East Kootenays know that we are still here to serve them, even though our flight capacity may be more limited for the next little while,” said Brent Bidston. “Following this necessary aircraft maintenance, we look forward to resuming full service with both planes, and we greatly appreciate the understanding of those who may be impacted during this time of transition.”

To date in 2025, AFEK has transported over 130 passengers to essential medical appointments, a testament to the growing demand for this service. Moving forward, AFEK remains committed to supporting the health and well-being of the East Kootenay region and will continue to work hard to ensure that residents have access to the care they need.
