The street sweepers and city staff will be helping homeowners get rid of leaves and branches.

Summer has gone, a shroud of grey has stretched across the sky and warm shades of reds and oranges have filled the trees.

But the possibilities of autumn can translate into a nightmare for cleaning up the city’s streets and yards, which is why the City of Trail has slated a Fall Clean-Up program to pick-up yard and garden waste and branches throughout Greater Trail at no cost.

It’s all part of the municipality’s year-long campaign to beautify the Silver City, said councillor Gord DeRosa, and to keep ahead of the accumulating dust, dirt and foliage.

As a result the city sweeps the total road system in the city five times per year, he said, adding that city crews are picking-up leaves around the neighbourhoods to prepare for winter.

The city is requesting that all residents do not place any refuse other than items listed above into city lanes or on city property. All other refuse must be stored on private property and disposed of appropriately.

However, loose leaves and clippings will not be picked up and there are a couple of other regulations to abide by, like bundling up branches in short lengths (not exceeding six feet).

In addition, the city will only pick up a maximum of one cubic yard of refuse (approximately a half ton truck full) of those items. Refuse in excess of this amount will be left behind. And finally, all yard and garden waste to be picked up should be placed on a property line close to the area where usual garbage is picked up.

The City of Trail will only pick up the items listed. It will be the owner’s responsibility to take all other refuses to the appropriate recycling facilities or the landfill site. Clear bags are available from the city at a cost of $1.50 per bag.

With the upcoming winter season, the city is now in the process of looking at signing snow removal contracts for various city parking lots, DeRosa added.

“It seems odd that we are talking about snow, but it will come,” he said.

Crews are scheduled for pick-ups between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and residents are asked to have the appropriate materials ready and placed outside by 7 a.m. on the first day scheduled in each area of town.

Homeowners in Glenmerry and the Waneta Area will be the first to receive the perks on Oct. 22 and 23. Shavers Bench and Miral Heights are next on Oct. 24. East Trail is slated for Oct. 25 and 26. Residents in Sunningdale on Oct. 29 and 30. West Trail on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 and last but not least, Tadanac on Nov. 2 and 5.

City crews will only visit each area once during the dates specified above.

The City of Rossland will be driving by each residence once and asks homeowners to ensure all items are on the boulevard by 7 a.m. on Oct. 29.

Any items placed on boulevard after Oct. 29 will not be picked up and homeowners will be responsible for taking it to the landfill.

But Warfield and Montrose don’t have any fall clean-up plans slated outside of their regular pick-up programs. Montrose will only have one more yard and garden pick-up on Oct. 25 and Fruitvale will follow suit.

“We do a Friday and follow up Monday pick up of yard waste and leaves,” said chief administrative officer Lila Cresswell.

This season’s fall clean up in Fruitvale will take place between Oct. 26 and Oct. 29.

Only organic material will be picked up and it must be placed in clear bags. Tree clippings must be tied in bundles no longer than 4 feet in length and piled in one location.

Cresswell said if residents chose to dispose of compostable yard and garden material themselves, the McKelvey Creek landfill site accepts these materials at a cost.
