Kokanee Creek - Bomb Squad neutralizes explosives

The Kokanee Creek Provincial Park is reopened following the discovery of a suspicious package that contained explosive material early Wednesday.

The Kokanee Creek Provincial Park is reopened following the discovery of a suspicious package that contained explosive material early Wednesday.

Police say the package was found near the boat launch area and did not pose a threat or safety hazard to the visitors in the camping area.

The RCMP Explosive Disposal accessed the homemade package about the size of a shoebox and found a pipe bomb and other explosive material that they successfully neutralized.

“The explosive package did not appear to be left in the Park for detonation but may have been left behind by someone for storage and possible retrieval at a later time,” explained Staff Sgt. Dan Seibel of the Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment in a news release. “The exact reason or purpose for leaving the package within the provincial park is not known at this time.”
