A portion of the Pend D’Oreille road (also called Waneta Nelway) remains closed following a major landslide last Wednesday.

The ministry reports a section of the road collapsed in the late morning of March 29, and brought down a small amount of debris and trees onto the Seven Mile Dam Road.

There were no injuries or vehicles involved in the incident.

After an assessment of the area, Emcon Services, the ministry’s road and bridge maintenance contractor, was able to clear the debris from Seven Mile Road and reopen it later that afternoon.

The future of the Waneta Nelway section remains uncertain. MOT (Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure) reports the road has very low traffic volumes and is closed in the winter.

A ministry spokesperson said there is access on either end and it does not connect to any private property.

“Our ministry is currently considering our options with respect to the final fix.”

Concrete barriers and signage have been placed on site to inform the public of the road closure and to keep people safely out of the area.

If the public has any questions, they are advised to contact the local ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure representative in the Trail office.
