Montrose residents paying to play

Montrose council is not concerned about their recreation facility running a deficit.

Although running a deficit for the fifth year in a row, no one on council questioned the merit of the losing enterprise when the item came up in their regular meeting last Tuesday night.

Montrose council heard that recreation had a deficit of $461.31 for the year ending in 2011.

“It’s providing recreation to the residents,” said Coun. Cindy Cook. “It’s not a concern. We consider it value added.”

The value it provided offset any of the financial loss it incurred, said Coun. Don Berriault.

Recreation in 2011 included a senior’s dinner, spring dance, Montrose family fun day, Halloween night and a winter celebration. Only the family fun day and fall/winter celebrations brought in revenue.

In 2010 recreation lost $1,133.64, while in 2009 it was down $3,337.91 and the losses hit a five-year low in 2008 at $4,283.94. In 2007, recreation lost $3,563.26.
