Police apprehend suspect on Canada-wide warrant in West Trail basement

A man considered a high risk to the Trail and Castlegar communities was arrested last Thursday on a Canada wide parole warrant.

A man considered a high risk to the Trail and Castlegar communities was arrested last Thursday on a Canada wide parole warrant.

Joel Hutchinson, 26, was found hiding in a West Trail basement at the time of his arrest.

Hutchinson had eluded police officers who attempted to arrest him the previous evening.

“Hutchinson had gone to great lengths to avoid police detection,” said RCMP Cpl. Darryl Orr of the Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment in a recent press release.

He was found in possession of cocaine at the time of his arrest.

Hutchinson was charged for escaping lawful custody and possession of cocaine, but police indicated that he was compliant at the time of the arrest.

Hutchinson appeared in Rossland Provincial Court the following day and pled guilty. He was sentenced to four months in custody on top of his parole violation, and will probably be moved to a Federal Correction Centre to serve the remainder of his sentence.
