Police called for backup fire and ambulance personnel when a man who was allegedly threatening his wife put his own life on the line.

A Lower Mainland woman called the Trail RCMP Jan. 31 and reported her father had called her in an angry state, threatening his estranged wife (her mother), who lives in Greater Trail.

“Police attended the accused residence in Rossland, however he refused to open the door and threatened to pour gasoline on himself and set himself and the house on fire,” said Trail RCMP Sgt. Rob Hawton in a news release.

Several nearby houses were evacuated as a result but the 65-year-old man was eventually persuaded to surrender peacefully and was arrested at about 8 a.m. without injury. There was later no gasoline located in the home.

The accused, who is well known to local police, is in custody on charges of uttering threats and is set to appear in Nelson Provincial Court today.
