Young film makers are invited to participate in an upcoming digital film workshop.
Film Camps is a project through the Kootenay Association for Science and Technology (KAST) and its youth program Growing, Learning Opportunities With Science (GLOWS), in partnership with the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture.
The youth filmmaking and digital workshop is geared to engage young people in a fun and creative way.
“There are still lots of open spots for teens to register for the workshops,” said Barry McLane, events manager and program assistant at KAST. “Originally they were open to teens aged 13-18, but we’ve changed it to aged 11-18.
“We’re really making a push to increase the registration this week, so that the camps can go ahead.”
Amy Bohigian of Watershed Productions will be instructing the program, employing the knowledge and expertise gained from her established youth film camps in Nelson.
“Amy is amazing,” said KAST’s program coordinator Erin Handy. “She’s an experienced documentary filmmaker and has a master’s in Education to boot.”
The program is expected to run in Trail (Oct.16-17), Rossland (Oct. 9-10), Castlegar and Crawford Bay over the next several weeks.
“GLOWS, our youth program, was established in the belief that technical learning can be creative and fun and relevant to real life,” Handy said.
“Filmmaking and digital media is a thriving field in the West Kootenay, and an area where hands-on skills can give our students a real edge in their future careers.
“We’re thrilled to partner with the Rossland Arts Council to give local teens a chance to showcase their ideas and creative ability.”
Each workshop can accommodate a maximum of eight kids, but needs a minimum of four or else KAST will cancel the GLOWS workshop.
Some participants utilize this special training as a skill-building workshop and stepping stone for the REEL Youth Film Festival in mid-November, an opportunity to test film skills against the best that international young filmmakers have to offer, or the Regional Under 19 Film Fest and Gala on the big screen at Trail’s Royal Theatre at the end of April.
