Rossland Mill burns

Flames engulfed a structure at a sawmill outside of Rossland Friday night, taking 22 area firefighters over four hours to get the blaze under control.

The cause of the mill fire at Jones Ties and Poles, on Highway 22 near the Paterson border crossing, is unknown at this time.

Investigators continue to mull through what is left of the mill after the “fairly large fire,” according to Capt. Tim Boutin of Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue.

After receiving a call at around 11:35 p.m. Friday, firefighters from Trail, Warfield, Rossland and Montrose worked together to douse the flames.

But crews had to wait for the roof of the structure to collapse before attacking the hot spots.

Boutin didn’t believe there were any employees on site.
