Heavy rain called for the West Kootenay

Strong wind gusts, up to toonie size hail and heavy rain in the forecast

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

These thunderstorms will be slow moving which can result in heavy rainfall.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for the West Kootenay.

Saturday afternoon, Environment Canada meteorologists announced they were tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing strong wind gusts, up to toonie size hail and heavy rain.

Commuters are cautioned that heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Large hail can damage property and cause injury.

Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.

Environment Canada advises, “Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors.”

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
