An employee-run program based in Trail has been recognized as one of the best in Canada.

The Inspiring Wellness and Learning (IWL) program at Teck Trail Operations was given the nod as one of the top wellness programs in Canada.

With a focus on encouraging healthy lifestyles among all employees, the program was one of three finalists in the Benefits Canada Workplace Health and Benefit Awards, hosted in Toronto.

The program offers healthy lifestyle and learn-to programs that include walking and yoga, with a focus on health education opportunities, including onsite kidney and mammography screening.

“The efforts of our program leaders and the participation of all employees, from personal health commitments to participating in events such as the Elementary School Hockey Challenge, are what make this program successful,” said Greg Belland, general manager of Teck Trail Operations.

As well, the program contains annual health checks to help employees learn about and improve their health. Belland said there are also opportunities in the program to better understand mental health concerns with the Beyond the Blues program.

Community outreach has also been a goal of the program, through events for employees, their families and the community, including the Elementary School Hockey Challenge, the Silver City Days Fun Run Corporate Challenge and the Kids-Tri triathlon.
