High insurance costs will keep a proposed portable drive-in theatre from making an appearance in Castlegar this summer.
Castlegar city council had already approved a proposal by Don Lindeman of Grand Forks and his non-profit organization to host a drive-in at the Geronazzo Pit area of Millennium Park, but the costs proved to be too high.
Lindeman’s goal with his drive in venture is to “keep drive-ins alive — because it is a big part of our tradition.” Last year the drive-in operated in Grand Forks.
Lindeman has however succeeded in making arrangements to host the drive-in at Beaver Creek Park-Camp Kiwanis near Trail and also in Greenwood.
The drive-in will feature public domain movies from the 1950s and ’60s. Sound will be broadcast through FM transmitters and a concession with real popcorn, chips, pops and snacks will be available on site.
“People are excited about keeping drive-ins,” said Lindeman. “We have had lots of feedback. There are some really fabulous movies that are out there that some of the older people are familiar with, and some of the younger people that have seen these shows have said, ‘I didn’t know these movies were so good.’”
