December 2, 1945 - March 12, 2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Albert Beverly Benson on March 12, 2019. Albert was born to Beverly and Winnie Benson on December 2, 1945 in Nelson, BC. The family moved to Trail the following year, where Bev established the B.A. Benson & Son Ltd. company, a fuel and lubricant distributor for Shell Canada (now Benson Oil).

Albert graduated from JL Crowe Secondary School in 1964 and attended the University of Victoria. In 1967, he assumed responsibility for the family business, becoming Shell's youngest agent.

Albert was an active member of his community. He managed the Trail Junior Smoke Eaters in the 1970s and sat as a board director of the team for many years. He was also a board member of United Way. Albert was a strong supporter of many youth sporting organizations, like minor hockey and soccer in both Trail and Castlegar.

Albert had a love of all things fast, especially sports cars, jet boats, and his Sea-Doos. He, along with many local volunteers, brought the popular international jet boat races to the Columbia River during Silver City Days in the 1980s and 1990s and was an avid racer himself. Albert had a special place in his heart for the Columbia River, living along its banks and navigating it his entire life. He was an avid snowmobiler and knew the Kootenay backcountry well. He also spent considerable time at Christina Lake at the family property, where he enjoyed many summers with his family.

Albert is survived by his wife and partner of over fifty years, Connie; his children Albert Jr., Sarah (Adam) and Beverley (David); his granddaughter, Winnie; his cousins Susan McLeod (Simon) of Tsawwassen, David Savage of Calgary, and Corinne Crockett (Tom) of Kelowna.

The family extends sincere thanks to the nursing staff in the Oncology Department at KBRH, Dr. Scotland and Dr. Wilson for their years of care and support.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 11 am at St. Andrew's Anglican Church (1347 Pine Avenue, Trail, BC). Gwen Ziprick of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services has been entrusted with the arrangements.

As an expression of sympathy, donations in Albert's name may be made to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital Foundation (Oncology Department) at 1200 Hospital Bench, Trail, BC, V1R 4M1 or online at www. kbrhhealthfoundation.ca or Greater Trail KidSport c/o the Trail Aquatic & Leisure Centre, 1875 Columbia Avenue, Trail, BC V1R 4T8 or online at www.kidsportcanada.ca (Greater Trail Chapter).
