In Loving Memory ~
It is with great sadness that the family of Diane Marie Kirchner (nee Smith) announce her passing on July 8, 2022.
Born in Trail, BC, to parents Alfred and Marie Smith on May 16, 1937.
Diane graduated in 1955 from J.L. Crowe Secondary School in Trail, BC and took the Senior Matriculation program the following year. From there she attended UBC in 1956-1957 to study pre-pharmacy with her high school friend Donna.
The following year, Diane attended the Lab Technology program at Vancouver General Hospital in 1957-1958 where she met her lifelong friends Tak, Marlene and Kenna.
After completing the course, Diane and Kenna moved to Nelson in the Fall of 1958-1959 to work as Lab Technicians at the hospital. From there, her studies took her back to UBC to obtain her Bachelor of Science.
She longed to travel and her next post was in Bellevue, Ontario working as a Lab Technician before returning to BC to teach at Simon Fraser University for a number of years.
It was during that time Diane met and married Glenn Kirchner, professor Emeriti.
Diane was athletic and enjoyed skiing at Red Mountain in her youth as well as basketball through her high school years.
She was an eternal environmentalist and loved and respected all living things and taught those around her to appreciate nature. She loved Glenn and their families fiercely. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and was always eager to learn.
More importantly she loved her dogs, most recently, Jackson, who predeceased Diane by a very short time. Nutrition and the study of gut health was a favourite and ongoing topic of discussion.
Diane will be forever remembered by her 4 stepsons, Grant, Paul (Jean), Brian (Aylene), Mark (Dawn) and Lisa (Grant spouse) as well as 5 loving nieces and nephews, Teri, Shelley, Tracy, Randy and Tara and many grandchildren and nieces and nephews that loved and admired her.
She is predeceased by her husband, Glenn, and her brothers, William (Bill) and George, and nephew Ricky.
A private family service will be held at her home on Aug 13 at 4:00 PM
In lieu of flowers a donation to the local SPCA or charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
