November 9, 1937 - February 13, 2023
In loving memory ~
It is with profound sorrow that we announce that on February 13, 2023, in Trail, British Columbia, DINO UMBERTO SANTAROSSA, age 85, passed from this world into the next.
Dino was born on November 9, 1937, in Casarsa Della Delizia, Udine, Italy. After farming the fields with his large extended family, he went to Switzerland for 3 1/2 years to start his chef training, then served with the Alpini in the Italian Army in Italy for 22 months. He was employed in many hotels in France and Italy to upgrade his skills in cooking, then in 1966 came to work in Canada where his first job started during the grand opening of the Terra Nova Hotel.
Dino worked in the camps for several large infrastructure projects throughout British Columbia, before opening his own restaurant in 1983, La Carbonara, with his spouse Elsa, in Elkford, British Columbia. After closing the restaurant in 1994, Dino returned to Trail and worked as a chef for Riverbelle Restaurant and Catering until he retired.
While in Trail, Dino was an active member in local Italian clubs, namely the Italo-Canadese Club and Club Italico. Dino also volunteered in many other capacities throughout his life including coaching and refereeing soccer, teaching cooking lessons, writing articles for the Trail Daily Times, singing in the church choir, and cooking for the Salvation Army (Kate's Kitchen) in Trail.
Dino married Elsa on November 20, 1965. After both emigrated to Canada in search of work and greater prospects, they had two children, Massimo and Margaret. The family was the most important to Dino. Dino took much joy and pride in the accomplishments of his two children and granddaughter. Nothing made him happier than to hear of their adventures and successes, and he loved spending time with his family.
Dino is predeceased by his parents, Antonio and Verginia Santarossa. He is survived by Elsa, his wife of 57 years, his son Massimo (Brenda), his daughter Margaret, his granddaughter Talia (Riley), his brother Ugo, his nieces in Italy and cousins in both Canada and Italy. Dino was a devoted husband, father, son and friend to many. He will be sorely missed.
The family would like to sincerely give thanks for the wonderful care provided by the staff and medical teams at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital.
A private ceremony will be held to honor his memory. Kole Roth of Clark's Funeral Services has been entrusted with arrangements.
As an expression of sympathy, donations can be made to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital Health Foundation at 1200 Hospital Bench, Trail, BC V1R 4M1 or online at www.kbrhhealthfoundation.ca or to the Greater Trail Hospice Society at 500 Columbia Ave, Trail, BC V1R 1K1 or online at www.trailhospice.org
