In loving memory ~
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Doreen Winifred Newman of Warfield. She died at home comforted by her husband, Sid and younger son, Ross after a long-standing heart condition.
Doreen was a happy and gentle person all her life and loved living in Warfield.
She remembered the London Blitz as a young girl, living in Sunbury-on-Thames, close to London, helping her Dad in the family vegetable garden, sleeping many nights with her siblings in the crowded family Morrison shelter in their sitting room and also having to race to a community air-raid shelter with her baby sister to avoid a falling V1 rocket.
In 1957, after attending college and spending two years as a teacher, she and a fellow teacher sailed to Canada for a year of teaching in Toronto and then to return to the UK after touring the U.S. However shortly after arriving in Toronto she met Sid who was staying in the same lodgings, and it was love at first sight for both. They married in December 1958 and in the next 5 years gave birth to two sons, Paul and Ross. In 1965 the family moved from Toronto to Castlegar where Sid was working on the construction of the Hugh Keenleyside Dam. At the end of that job, the family relocated briefly to Elkford and finally to Warfield in 1973.
Doreen worked as a secretary at the Knox United Church for 2 years and for 20 years as a secretary to Sid's engineering company.
Doreen loved the Kootenays and enjoyed participating in a wide range of activities. She was the greeter at the VISAC Gallery for several years, and was an organiser of two provincial elections. She enjoyed gardening, reading, sewing, cooking, entertaining, camping, and sailing. She was excellent at crosswords and Scrabble. She enjoyed visiting relatives in the U.K. and touring Europe, China, Mexico and Hawaii. She was always a pleasure to have close by.
She leaves behind her loving husband, Sid, sons Paul (Li) and Ross (Michele), sisters Margaret (Salisbury, UK) and Jenny (Markham, Ont) and several nephews and nieces in the UK and Melbourne, Australia. She was pre-deceased by her parents William and Dorothy Randall and brother David.
Her family would like to give many thanks of appreciation to Doctors Wilson, Aiken, Hamilton and Paul and to the nurses and staff of the Columbia Primary Care Clinic, the Kootenay-Boundary Regional Hospital, Interior Health Home Services, the BC Ambulance Service and Bill Clark of the Clark's Funeral Services for the wonderful care and help they all provided.
A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Bill Clark of Clark's Funeral Services has been entrusted with arrangements.
As an expression of sympathy, donations in Doreen's name may be made to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital Health Foundation at 1200 Hospital Bench, Trail, BC V1R 4M1 or online at www.kbrhhealthfoundation.ca or to a charity of your choice.
You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence at the family's online register at www.clarksfunera.ca.
